Well, not really new, but I still can't seem to take my "Killers" cd out of my car.

I think Snow Patrol's 'Chasing Cars' and Keanes 'Is it any wonder' are still my two songs of the moment though.

Best CD of the moment is Angels and Airwaves. Their song 'the machine' is probably one of the best songs I've ever heard.

i'm currently more or less obsessed with a band called Breed 77- they're a spanish-gibraltan band based in london (i think!). overall, they describe their sound as 'flamenco metal', which isn't quite as wierd a concept as it might sound. i think they're planning on spreading their wings a bit, and going after the american an australian markets in a big way in the next few months. they're not such a well known band at the minute, though i think they deserve to be. i'd be interested to hear if anyone here knows about them? off the top of my head, if anyone were to ask me to recommend a couple of their tracks, i'd say 'La Ultima Hora' (off their 'Cultura' album) and 'Breaking the silence', 'karma' and 'Floods' off their first album. there's probably a couple of tracks <cough> that i could recommend off their new album <cough> which is out in september <cough>....but i don't have a copy of it <cough> :roll: :wink: i first heard the band after flicking through the music channels on the cable package that i have- 'La Ultima Hora' had just been released. it made me stop and listen...which is why i was asking if anyone else had discovered a band that they enjoy listening to in a similar way? it needn't be someone that no-one's ever heard of...perhaps you've finally got onto the foo fighters bandwagon, for example...? (i was speaking to someone the other day, younger than i am, who says she's never heard any of their stuff-and they seem to dominate the scene at the minute!! so anything's possible... :) )

there's a little thing at the top of the screen called 'breed radio' (it's fairly simple to work out how to use!) that plays snippets of several of their tracks :)
i tend to struggle at the minute when it comes to finding out about new bands. the bf has taken over the tv, so i don't get to flick through the music channels so much, i work mainly out of an office now (so i don't get to listen to the radio), and IT at work won't let us stream or download anything...miserable sods and their precious bandwidth..... i'm relying on oher people to tell me how great new bands are now!!!

Currently touring the UK are Hayseed Dixie (get the wordplay?). If you get a chance, check them out, especially if you enjoy your favorite rock anthems rearranged in the bluegrass style. another annoyance at the minute is the fact that at the minute, i can't download or stream anything that has anything to do with quicktime (including SadCasts :cry: ). those nice people at dell saw fit to configure my computer in such a way that when i removed the mcafee security suite (that was free for 3 months) when the trial period expired, it took out part of quicktime with it- stopping it working. i can't uninstall it and do a fresh install because it's taken out part of quicktime's uninstall program, and if i do a system restore to a point before i uninstalled mcafee (at which time quicktime starts working again) and am then able to get quicktime off my computer, i can't then get rid of mcafee...grrrrr :evil:

Musical discovery or not, after seeing the LG chocolate commercial and the promos for Nip/Tuck, I too have fallen in love with a Strict Maching and Goldfrapp.

Off the musical subject, but I can commiserate with the Dell/McAfee situtation. They have a way of taking the "convenient" personal home computer and twisting into a nightmarish configuation of wires and faulty programming that force you to commit horrific crimes against humanity in frustration. But I'm not bitter or anything :wink:

Going off topic a bit but I hate to see large corporations forcing their choice of products on the buyer. I have been buying Dells since 1998. They have changed a bit since then going the way of Sony and other mass market suppliers by chanelling you down the 'one click installation route (remember Packard Bell? I still have nightmares). My current Inspiron arrived with such an installation but I use Sofos and dislike McAfee with a passion. I ended up extracting the operating system from the backup partition doing a reinstallation of only what I wanted.

As a suggestion, if you uninstall McAfee, delete any folders left over for McAfee and Quicktime, then use a registry cleaner to remove any references to McAfee and Quicktime from the registry. The reinstallation of Quicktime should then work. You can do this by hand but if you are not 100% confident, get some help, just not from PC World but that's another story. :evil: Hope this helps. thanks for the suggestions on how to deal with my dell/mcafee situation....not really confident enough to deal with it myself, so i've asked IT at work if they can have a look at it for me. trouble is, the company's setting up a new computerised business management/database system, which went live today. IT did say they'll look at my computer next week, but i'm not holding my breath.... :( so if anyone in the meantime suggests i check out a certain video by a certain band, if it plays only through quicktime, i'm stuffed.....

I make old songs new to me again, "Baba O'Reilly"by The Who is one.

I find it hard to listen to some newer hardcore stuff, it's kinda whiny if not downright depressing, i need upbeat stuff especially since I feel downhearted about what is coming to be. I mean the writers and producers spouses now take over fan BB's (like theone i got thrown off of) that's not right. it becomes a stage for all the things I abhor. This is not a voice for all then, those that wish to speak their minds are silenced or pushed into going along with the crowd to fit in. Just because Mrs. Mucky-muck says so?

Not hardly. I think she should concentrate on her fertility shots and leave fans alone and that goes for all her ilk. The boards are for fans not people with vested intersts in outcomes. If it remains that become a tool, a marketing tool. Information may be but conduct your little favorite fan club off public BB's!

There is no last free vestige away from these people. No place to just say yes good, this is a good part, no this is not without some writers wife breathing down one's neck with a new login name.

which sums up what i feel this does to a fanbase. Regular people look to these idols they make for themselves thinking they are cool but these self-proclaimed paragons that are raised higher then us don't know true suffering so how can they relate?

Nice topic. Well, the last year has been a real voyage of musical discovery for me.

It started with wanting to re-explore the so-called Prog world. So I rediscovered 70's Progressive Rock (an often problematic label incidentally) that I hadn;t listened to in many years like certain Yes releases, Gryphon, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Genesis, King Crimson, Camel (The Snow Goose)and Focus (Hamburger Concerto being one of my favourite albums of all). That brought me into discovering other English 70's bands like Gentle Giant, which was a real revelation as I hadn't known them before... 72's Acquiring the Taste (and their subsequent six albums), for instance, is such an unusual album. It blends mediaeval troubadour styles with jazz and rock. They have some amazing (at least for rock) vocal harmonies.

Gentle Giant was a huge discovery for me -- lousy name though. It's a band that Prog fans are divided on -- some love them, and some hate them.

A lot of the music I listened to I discovered through progarchives. Then I got into 70's Italian bands like Premiata Forneria Marconi, Le orme, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, and Museo Rosenbach (Zarathustra's a great rockin' album). Then into French 70's bands like Carpe Diem, various Spanish ones, and various Quebecois ones (mostly jazz-fusion from Quebec). So much music that I won't bother to pick and choose.

I always had an eye on making my tastes more contemporary since for too long I focussed on classic rock. I discovered a great 1983 album by a Brazilian band -- Bacamarte's Depois do Fim (sadly out of print).

From the 90's, Anglagard's Hybris was an eye-opener. Lots of great music from Sweden. Can download Jordrok at their official site (very good, I thought). http://www.anglagard.net/sounds.htm
For a somewhat similar band with a harder edge I think, I suggest Anekdoten: http://www.myspace.com/anekdoten I'm not a fan of Anekdoten to tell the truth, at all. Oh gloom... Bah! Got way too much emoting for my tastes (oh I don't like Emo -- embarrassing).

Lots of great music from this decade. My most recent find is Kotebel's 2006 release, Omphalos. I really like it, but it certainly won't appeal to most people. It's part rock, part opera, part Braoque, part this and that. I like music that fuses genres to create something new (which is why I tend to like much so-called Prog, though I don't like all of the Prog subgenres. Neo-prog (as often classified) is yucky, and I have a somewhat limited appreciation for Progressive Metal).

It's hardly a perfect album for me though, as I find it suffers from too much repetition. Some will find it pretentious. KArda Estra is another one that I like (kind of Western Art Music meets Jazz Rock and Gothic) -- and no, I'm hardly Goth.

My musical tastes and repertoire have expanded greatly over the last 12 months or so. I am listening to a lot of fusion and avant garde music these days. Much is hard to find simply because I do tend to avoid the really commercial stuff -- the music I listen to has, on the whole, limited popular appeal even though it ranges from hard rock to classical to jazz to folk inspired (sometimes a combination of all of the above).

I just got so sick of listening to the same old stuff on the radio (like the classic rock station that has been playing the same setlist for donkey's years). Sure it's classic rock, but there's so much to choose from, but it's the same old blues based repertoire (blues pentatonic scale) again and again with the same old time signatures. It's very bring for me when they're sticking to 4/4 (or 3/4) time. I want variations in rythym. That's one of the big problems for me with much music -- steady beats and boring drumming, and music that plays by the rules of the genre (is overly commercial and radio-friendly).

Just like good sci-fi shows/ movies, I want to see bands that are experimental, and aren't afraid to push the boundaries, innovate, and boldly go in their own musical direction rthaer than where the industry wnats them to go. On reason why i think it's such a great time for music is because many musicians aren't forced to suck the industry's teat anymore. They have their own labels and can do their own thing. They may not become rich and famous off it, but thanks to technological developments, they can at least find an audience for their music (na dit's become easier to produce your own). Of course it's nice if they can make enough money off their art to quit their day jobs and conentrate on making music.

I guess I am not much of a spring person, since this is the one season I don't automatically think of any certain song when I think about that season. But... if I do think about it a minute, I guess I would have to go with the Eurythmics and their song, Here Comes The Rain Again.

Winter - Hazy Shade Of Winter - The Bangles. You can't really tell it from the sample here, but the lead in to the song, is so totally after Thanksgiving with snippletts of the salvation army kettle bells. The way they use to be, when real bell ringers did them, not as they are now with part time temps. ( I liked this song when Simon and garfunkle did it, but now... I can't even listen to their version.)

I had a weekend of sea-connected movies. I watched Poseidon; don't bother... Annapolis.... something about sailor whites man that can make a girl's heart beat a little faster.... :wink: I like the fact that sailors are gone for a long period of time.....'cause to have them underfoot would get on my nerves; men should just put into port about once or twice a month and then ship off. :twisted: And be with other guys; sure write all the letters ya want but leaves of twice a month on non-PMS times are all my stamina can allow.

And the last was kind of sea related but earth related;The Inconvenient Truth..... that was the eye-opener for me.

I didn't go too often because trying to unglue somebody’s sweaty hands from my various body parts, in the dark and with the endless repetitions of Fernando, I will survive and, grrrrrrrrr, Sunny, wasn’t my idea of fun. Now of course it seems almost like an idyllic memory ...
And speaking of gorgeous sailors, I just watched Pirates of the Caribbean II. Twice. No, I am lying. Twice and a half. Thanks for a head-on on Al Gore’s film, it’s been on my list for some time. I’m definitely going to see it. After the last years’ hurricanes, I'll never look at natural disasters the same way.
