New Navigation ideasThe current menu structure is getting me down a bit. It's MURDER to maintain and not too easy for peeps to access all the features of the site. I'm therefore looking at a few designs for a new menu layout - the following are the favourites:
Consolidation of all features of the site into ONE menu.[/list:u]
Main Menu will have master items that wizz out to side menus (javascript)[/list:u]
Images will be used with the menus [/list:u]
Take out all the Language buttons and facilities (hardly used (if at all))[/list:u]

Re:New Navigation ideas
All right! A whizzing main menu. :) This is a guy thing right?
I have a wish too.... but I am not sure if it is possible.... when someone goes off the main page to the forum section, can it expand to show the two or three topics in each forum? Or can we at least try it on some of our more active forums? I think it will help the posting.... since one something gets pushed off the main page, you may not know where it is even if you want to comment on it. Or, if you are just peeking, perhaps something in a forum you normally would not think to look in, might catch your attention.
Hummm???
Re:New Navigation ideas
Hmm... Interesting. I honestly don't know how to do it or if it can be done, but the forum is one of those all singing, all dancing BBS systems that has been adapted to be used with this Content Management System. It's very possible that someone has done some sort of hack that is along similar lines. I'll check the websites out (phpBB2) and see what I can find and get back to you.
Re: New Navigation ideas
I like the idea of having a single menu. And I would agree that the site needs a facelift.
The javascript is nice, so long as it doesn't crash the browser.
In the past you talked about having a pop-up menu. I really don't care for this idea. Chances are pop-up blockers will 86 it before it has a chance to load. And for many others it'll just be a big inconvience.
I'd like to see the quote generator at the top of the page, in a corner, but then again I'd like to see lots of things at the top of the page...
My only real request is to leave in the tabs for all the guides. That was the big selling point for when I firs arrived here, seeing all the variety. Although we are starting to have the "good problem" of too many guides. I use a small monitor and I can barely fit all the tabs into one window.
This asks the question of should we remove some tabs?
Battlestar Galactica, Dune, Hitch Hikers, and Tripping are complete guides. However all of these are short series, and contain a small number of reviews, except for TTR.
The following guides are over 50% but less then 100% complete:
Aeon Flux
Crusade
Firefly
Futurama
LEXX
Red Dwarf
Some of are longer running shows, and are only a few episode reviews short of a complete guide.
The following is 25%-50% complete:
Andromeda
Babylon 5
Farscape
B5 is only 40% done, but it has more reviews then most of the other guides!
The following are less then 25% complete:
Buffy s7
The Prisoner
Nowhere Man
So if we were to hypothetically remove tabs, would we base it on number of reviews, percent complete, popularity on the site?

*Disclaimer* I am a complete ignoramous when it comes to website design and maintenance-please don't laugh too hard*
How feasable would it be to arrange the tabs in whatever manner you like and have slide menus for the sections? The experience I have as a user of slide menu navigation is a positive one. I like the fact that the navigation menu is hidden until you call for it. The only "problem" is calling attention to the slide itself, which is why I suggest the tabs stay. Again, don't laugh too hard.

Re:New Navigation ideas
I'll leave the TAB's block in. Though I'd actually like to see all the tabs there (might help to encourage someone to finish the unfinished ones :) )
Aqua, I've tried to add tabs in the main menu sections area. I hope that's what you were meaning.
Headge. I was maybe thinking of using the fact that there are lots of tabs to maybe string them along the top of the page, maybe above the last forum posts and visible on each page? It's a bit awkward for users with small browser windows though.
I've taken off the silly top 50 websites thing and moved the search box down a bit. I'm tempted to allow only admins and mods to see the Top Searches box, though I can't say it's been that useful.
Re:New Navigation ideas
Besides the list of search queries will show the query AND the IP address for all users, not just mods/admins! I think is more of a concern then the comments displaying the IP address publicly.

The complete ignoramus (who apparently can't spell ignoramus in her first post) weighs in - I like it, very nice. That is all. :D
